Rabbeinu Yonah son of Avraham the Gironan, also known as Jonah of Girona and Rabbeinu Yonah רבינו יונה was a Catalan rabbi and moralist, cousin of Nahmanides. He is most famous for his ethical work The Gates of Repentance and interpretation on Pirkei Avot- The Ethics of our Fathers. Much of what is known about his life comes from a responsum by Solomon ben Simon Duran, one of his descendants. Rabbeinu Jonah Gerondi Z”L came from Girona, in Catalonia (present-day Spain). He was the most prominent pupil of Solomon ben Avraham of Montpellier, the leader of the opponents of Maimonides' philosophical works, and was one of the signers of the ban proclaimed in 1233 against The Guide for the Perplexed and the Sefer ha-Madda. Rabbeinu Yonah’s commentary on Pirkei Avot - Ethics of the Fathers is the greatest and most beautiful commentary. His is more in depth compared to those of Rashi and the Rambam

רבינו יונה הוא הדמות השנייה המרכזית בחייה הציבוריים והדתיים של יהדות ספרד באמצע המאה ה-13 ומענקי הרוח של יהדות מפוארת זו בכל הדורות. לדורות נתפרסם כבעל המוסר הגדול, ובזמנו נודע בעיקר בזכות פועלו הציבורי: דרשן, לוחם אמיץ בהנהגה המושחתת, וראש ישיבה גדולה בברצלונה ובטולדו, שבה העמיד תלמידים הרבה שהמשיכו את דרכו. עיקר פירסומו של רבינו יונה קשור בתורת המוסר שלו, אשר לא קם כמוהו מדבר ביראת ה' למשוך לבות בני האדם לדרכי החסידות" (כדברי רבי שמעון בן רבי צמח דוראן בהקדמה לפירושו לפרקי אבות). כמה מתלמידיו כתבו חידושים על מסכתות שונות שרובו או כולו ממנו, וקרויים בשם חידושי תלמידי רבינו יונה ובקצרה תר"י. הרשב"א והרא"ש מרבים לצטט מחידושיו גם למסכתות נוספות. חיבר ספר מוסר כללי הנקרא שערי צדק אשר רובו אבד ונשאר ממנו הספר "שערי תשובה". חיבר פירוש על ספר משלי, וכן חיבר פירוש חשוב על מסכת אבות שהוא
